The day before our Thanksgiving break the 4th grade made our big pioneer trek. Each class represented a company and we broke into families, each with roles and responsibilities. Each student was a specific pioneer who really did make the trek back in the 1840's.
We left that sunny morning (thank goodness it wasn't freezing!) with two handcarts to pull per company.
Most of us were able to wear appropriate clothing for the long walk and we were excited to make our way to the Salt Lake Valley.
Along the way we would stop that represented certain spots along the trail. We would learn about the hardships that took place there with the pioneers and read parts of journal entries.
At this particular spot we stopped and learned how to play some of the games the pioneer children played. We had a great time!
We each got multiple chances at pulling the handcart. The rest of us walked along the sides, helping when needed to lift the heavy cart.
About half way there and everyone still has a smile on their face, good sign!
At one stop we put down our things, parked the handcarts and enjoyed some square dancing!
Chanel, Bailey, and Harley were great pioneers!
Dallin showing off his "hobo stick" . . . he was very proud of it!
The Jackson Family . . . the father (Luke) died along the trek.
The Crook Family - Every member of this family died along the way.
The Larsen Family - the father (Karson) died along the trail.
The Cunningham Family
The Caldwell Family
Yahoo! We finally were able to see the Great Salt Lake (the fishing pond)! Unfortunately many pioneers got sick within miles of the valley so we had to stay put and wait a few days!
Boys will be boys. . .
What lovely ladies. . .
Once to the Salt Lake Valley we all enjoyed a yummy lunch of soups and rolls! We celebrated our arrival and played games with the other pioneers from different companies. Then it was time to continue the trek to form settlements.
Check out that girl power! All ladies pulling the handcart!!!
We finally made it to our settlement (the school) and couldn't help but smile as the 5th graders (who did this last year and know what tough work it is) cheered us on. We made it! Although we were exhausted we were proud of ourselves for working hard, working together, and making it! We also realized just how much the real pioneers went through to make it here and form the settlement and communities we enjoy today.
A BIG thank you to all the wonderful parents who walked along with us (and dressed up!), cooked soup, and/or sent rolls. We really appreciate it!
