Rock Poppin' Writing!!

Is it me or is time FLYING??????  I never seem to be able to catch up so this post has been sitting in my "draft" folder for a couple of weeks now.  In Unit 1 we talked all about descriptive writing.  We were able to do a super fun writing project that took about two weeks to complete.  Here is a little taste. . .

One day the students arrived to school and noticed a big, shiny gift bag sitting on the counter.  It didn't take long for the whispers to start and someone asked what it was for.  I told them they would have to wait for writing time.   They were dying to see what was inside so when writing time came around they were thrilled!  We started talking about descriptive writing and how we need to use all our senses to help readers understand what is going on.   We described our gift bag as a class and thought of some great adjectives.  The next day we were able to open the bag (and may I add that it nearly killed them to wait 24 hours for the big reveal?!?!)  When we looked inside we saw POP ROCKS!!!  How fun is that?  A big shout out to our local Dollar Tree who donated 30 packages of Pop Rocks for us to enjoy.  We delighted in smelling, tasting, feeling, and hearing our Pop Rocks!  We wrote and wrote  all about what was going inside our mouths and loved every minute of it.
We were also learning about SIMILES and how they compare two things using the word LIKE or AS.  Check out our anchor chart of awesome comparisons of things to Pop Rocks!

We continued our project by writing descriptive paragraphs about the one moment.  We referred back to all our graphic organizers and charts and tried to SHOW what it was like rather than tell.

To throw the whole thing together to display in the hall we did a fun art project, showing us with our Pop Rocks!  YUM!!

Who knew writing could be so fun?!?!?!?!
